Skinny Verna Runner in 'Martinique by 3 Sisters'
I recently ordered a walking foot for my machine and - WOW - what a difference it made. I didn't know what I was missing before, it was so lovely to use. Can someone tell me if there is such a thing as a 1/4" walking foot, or do you just change the needle position to line it up to 1/4" when you need to? The first version I made of this runner I quilted in 1/4" lines, but this one is more like 1/2" and I also didn't quilt the white edges this time round. I'm putting this away as a gift for my aunt who is celebrating a big birthday this year. This was my first attempt at machining the whole binding and it worked out well. Hand sewing the back of the binding at the end is one of my least favourite jobs.

I use masking tape for marking straight lines, you can get it in different widths and it is re-usable a couple of times. Just what works for me:O)

I also use tape to mark my stitching line, I use the white papery tape that you get from the chemist. Your stitching looks immaculate, well done .
That is just beautiful! And so perfectly sewn. Was there any problem machine sewing the binding? Did the back side egge get picked up easily?

Ooh, I love the texture the quilting makes on the runner. I'll definitely have to try that one. I think my walking foot is a 1/4 inch, I have a brother machine. Also a free motion foot is a must have too.

Don't know about a 1/4 inch walking foot.
Hi Nicky, wow what a pretty FFFFFFFinish, well done you. Now as far as your 1/4" goes, get one of your quilting rulers and put it under your walking foot with the edge being where the needle is (in the centre). You should be able to line up a 1/4" with some sort of mark or line on your walking foot - you know, something that will give you a point of registration. Good luck.

Fantastic runner Nicky. My walking foot (Bernina) has a mark at 1/4".
It depends on your sewing machine brand, I have a Janome, a Brother and a Bernina and only my Bernina has the 1/4" mark. On my other 2 machines I used to stitch a row on paper and measure and position my needle til it was set at a 1/4". I then printed a label and stuck it ( hidden but where I could see it ) to my machine. It had the info to instantly set 1/4" on that machine.
Love your quilting. It completely changes the look.

I've never measured my walking foot! Must try that... it's the best though, love it.
My machine and the foot came with a seam guide for this very purpose. It's a thin pole which slots into the back of the foot, then it has a curved side piece which you line up with the previous line of stitching and follow - I wonder if you could pull it forward in front of your foot? If you don't know what I mean, I'll send you a picture.
Lovely table runner Nicky - very style-y. I'm interested in the binding.. did you sew on at the back first and then top stitch the binding down from the top??
